When it comes to healing trauma or managing chronic stress, many people focus on mindset work, therapy, or trying to "think" their way to peace.
But the truth is: trauma lives in the body and healing does, too.
That’s where Reiki comes in.
🌿 What is Reiki?
Reiki is a form of energy healing that supports your body’s natural ability to restore balance. It’s gentle, non-invasive, and can be done virtually. It doesn’t require you to talk, perform, or explain, just to show up.
As an Advanced Reiki Practioner, a Certified Trauma Recovery Coach, AND a trauma survivor myself, I approach Reiki with care, intention, and deep respect for your nervous system. Reiki energy healing is a nervous system regulation tool I utilize myself when PTSD symptoms and trauma responses surface.
🧠 How Reiki Helps the Nervous System
Our nervous systems are often stuck in survival states:
Fight
Flight
Freeze
Fawn
🧠 Understanding the Survival States
When we experience trauma or chronic stress, our nervous system does what it’s built to do: protect us. It shifts into survival mode sometimes without us even realizing it.
These survival responses are automatic, and they’re not a choice. They’re our body’s way of saying: “Something doesn’t feel safe right now.”
Here are the four main survival states, explained simply:
🔥 Fight
Your body senses a threat and gears up to defend. This might look like:
Anger or irritability
Defensiveness or blaming
Controlling behaviours
Tension in the jaw, fists, or chest
You’re not “being difficult”....... you’re trying to stay safe.
🏃🏽♀️ Flight
You feel unsafe and want to escape. This might show up as:
Anxiety or panic
Restlessness or overworking
Perfectionism or constant busyness
Avoiding people or hard tasks
This isn’t you being “too busy”...... this is a nervous system trying to outrun danger.
❄️ Freeze
Your body shuts down or goes numb because fighting or fleeing doesn’t feel possible. You may notice:
Feeling disconnected or “spaced out”
Trouble making decisions
Feeling stuck or unmotivated
Physical heaviness or fatigue
Freeze is not laziness, it’s your body’s emergency brake.
🤝 Fawn
This response often gets overlooked. It’s when you try to stay safe by people-pleasing or caretaking others. It may include:
Saying yes when you mean no
Avoiding conflict at all costs
Over-apologizing
Prioritizing others’ needs over your own
Fawning is a survival skill developed in unsafe environments ~ it’s not weakness, it’s adaptation.
💛 Why It Matters
These states aren’t bad. They’re signs your body is doing its best to protect you.
But when we live in them long-term, it can lead to burnout, health issues, and emotional overwhelm.
Trauma-informed care helps us recognize these states without shame - and supports us in returning to safety.
If you're ready to understand your nervous system and build tools to regulate, you're not alone. This is exactly what we do at Aware NL.
Reiki works by supporting your parasympathetic nervous system your body’s rest-and-digest state. When this system is activated, your body can finally slow down, breathe deeper, and begin to feel safe again.
💛 The Benefits
Reiki for nervous system regulation can help you:
Feel more grounded and calm
Gently release physical and emotional tension
Rest deeply (often for the first time in a while)
Improve emotional regulation
Reconnect with your body safely
For trauma survivors or anyone living in a dysregulated state, Reiki can offer a unique kind of relief ~ one that doesn’t rely on words or intellectual understanding. It simply meets you where you are.
